Introduction to cloud hosting - kualo web hosting

What is the cloud ?

Cloud hosting is a big deal - it's a revolution in hosting and in IT infrastructure more generally. Companies are switching over from physical infrastructure to cloud hosted environments in their droves, so much so that by 2012, business analysts IDC expect cloud computing to capture 25% of all IT spending. And it's easy to see why...

  • Massive reductions in infrastructure costs
  • Instant flexibility to scale IT resources
  • Faster time-to-market for new applications
  • Full server hardware redundancy

Cloud Servers are configured to your exact specification, to suit your precise requirements. Just drag the sliders to select the amount of CPU, memory and disk space that you'll need. If you're not sure - get in touch and let us know what you will use the server for and we'll be happy to advise you.

So just what is cloud hosting ?

It all starts with the concept of "virtualization". Virtualization allows a single physical server to be partitioned into multiple "virtual servers", each given specific allocations of the server's memory, processing power and disk space. Because the resources are virtualized, it's possible to increase and decrease them on the fly - meaning you can scale up from a small virtualized environment to a larger one as your needs increase, or scale down should they decrease. Your costs are tied to your usage and you are not paying for server resources that you don't use, as could be the case on an underutilized dedicated server.
Cloud hosting takes this concept one step further. Multiple servers are connected together over a private gigabit speed network, and a grid operating system is installed on each of them which essentially binds them together. Not only do you now have the same ability to scale resources on demand, but you also have an in-built redundancy. Any data uploaded to a virtualized environment is 1:1 mirrored on a different physical server. Furthermore, the grid operating system reserves enough spare resources to withstand the failure of a physical server. In the event that a physical server fails, the data on it remains available and the resources are simply restarted elsewhere in the cloud. Best of all, this happens automatically, and takes just 3-5 minutes to complete.

The power of AppLogic

Our cloud hosting platform is powered by 3Tera® AppLogic™ technology. AppLogic not only allows us to build a highly redundant scalable environment. It allows us to design and build complex distributed hosting infrastructures that would once have taken weeks, in just a matter of hours. Environments with multiple load balanced web servers, replicated database servers, firewalls and more, can all be tested, monitored and perfected at a fraction of the cost of doing so with physical hardware. For customers with very particular redundancy requirements, our engineering team can even mitigate the 3-5 minute automatic failover period, by the design of the particular environment. Ask us for details.
For customers with in-house technical teams, with our 'Virtual Colo' service, we can provision access to a visual editor where you can create your N-tier environments yourself in your own private cloud. Create, modify and scale your environment on demand - all remotely via an easy to use drag-and-drop web interface. Contact us for more information.

Why you'll love the cloud

Scale On Demand
Everybody wants to be popular. But what could be worse than your site going offline for just that reason?
When your site gets tweeted, dugg, slashdotted - the influx of thousands of visitors can bring a normal server to a grinding halt. It could be down for hours whilst new hardware is prepared to meet the demand.
On the cloud, you just scale up when you need to. When the demand subsides, you scale back down again. Pay only for what you need - when you need it.
Automatic Failover
With a traditional server, if the hard drive dies or the motherboard gets fried, you could be offline for hours whilst it is repaired. And there's no guarantee your data will still be intact once it comes back online.
With the Cloud's self healing architecture, you can kiss extended downtime, data loss and hair pulling goodbye. All cloud servers are mirrored across a grid of servers. When a server fails the data remains available, and any affected Cloud Servers are automatically re-deployed elsewhere on the cloud within minutes.
Easy To Adopt
A cloud server works just like a traditional Linux server. Anything you can deploy on a linux dedicated server can be deployed on our redundant cloud and is instantly scalable to meet demand. You don't have to learn any new coding methods for your applications, and the server can be managed in the same way as a traditional server.
If you don't have experience managing servers, we provide server management plans for a small additional monthly fee to give you complete peace of mind. We can even help you migrate from your existing hosting platform for you!
Built To Your Spec
Why pay for what you don't need? We give you the flexibility to scale up your processor, memory and disk space independently of each other, and whenever you need to. This enables you to keep your initial hosting costs low as you pay for what you use now, not what you might need to use in the future.
High Availability Deployments
If your requirements outgrow a single cloud server, look no further. We can deploy fully scalable environments with multiple cloud servers in advanced configurations to deal with extreme load or redundancy requirements. We can deploy virtual firewalls, load balancers, replicated database servers within the cloud - and then test the infrastructure with built in load testing and monitoring functionality to simulate extreme demand. Sexy!
Snapshot Backups
Kiss goodbye to traditional backup solutions and data restores. On the cloud we simply take a snapshot of your entire server - or even of a multi-server infrastructure. Should you need to roll back to that snapshot, we just shut down your live environment and start up the snapshot and you're up and running in minutes.
It's like having fully configured standby servers ready to deploy on-demand - just without the expense!
Better for the Environment
A cloud server has a far smaller environmental impact than a traditional server. Analysts IDC estimate that the cost of powering and cooling servers in the US alone is $14bn per year. The energy this consumes is huge - and much of it is wasted on powering underutilized servers. The cloud brings much greater levels of efficiency as multiple virtual servers can be provisioned on the same physical hardware. This means a greatly reduced use of datacenter space, and consequently a significant reduction in the demand for power and cooling. Cloud hosting is integral for a greener future for the Internet.
